Datum Explorer

Datum Explorer is a multi-platform project which proposes an alternative virtual wilderness that can be experienced in the same meditative mindset as a physical landscape. It took the form of a game app and a site specific installation presented at Datum Festival 2014 and Sonar Festival 2015.

In July 2014 a forest in East Sussex was surveyed using a terrestrial 3D scanner and binaural recording device. This 3D dataset was re-imagined as an exploratory digital landscape - part site survey and part game environment re-animated with ghostly animals. Game engines have the potential for non-linear storytelling and 3d interaction, turning it from being a static archive to a living system.

As part a site specific installation, the point cloud was projection mapped back into its original environment to create an immersive and collective virtual experience fusing nature and data.
